After years of working with kids and families, we’ve carefully curated this prep guide to help create the most positive experience possible. Everything here is designed specifically with children in mind — based on what we’ve seen work best again and again.
Here’s what to expect and how to prepare for your appointment, so the process feels smooth, comfortable, and empowering for both of you.
Age minimums for earlobe piercings:
4 years old for first lobe piercings
9 years old for second lobe piercings
A parent or legal guardian must be present and complete our consent waiver in person for all minors. We also require government-issued photo ID for the parent/guardian, as well ID for the child.
It’s important that your child also gives their own direct consent to the piercer before we begin. We will always take the time to check in with them personally to make sure they understand what’s happening and feel ready to proceed. If your child decides they don’t want to continue, we will not move forward with the piercing.
Plan to arrive on time for your scheduled appointment, not too early or late. Arriving early can cause unnecessary wait time (and added nerves!), while being late may result in your appointment needing to be rescheduled. When you come in at your designated time, we’ll be ready to greet you and get started right away.
Children’s lobe appointments are booked for 20 minutes to allow plenty of time for questions and to ensure a relaxed, pressure-free experience , the actual piercing process itself takes less than 10 minutes.
Included with your child’s piercing are surgical steel flat-back studs with small, 3mm clear cubic zirconias on the front.
If your child has a known metal allergy or if you’d prefer a biocompatible option, we offer an upgrade to titanium studs for an additional $30. This upgrade is strongly recommended for first-time piercings when metal sensitivities may be unknown.
If you’d like to choose titanium, just let the piercer know at the start of the appointment.
The studs will be long to allow room for swelling, and need to be downsized in approximately 8 weeks. This is a great time to choose a new earring if your child prefers. Continue to stick to implant grade metals only.
We strongly encourage you to prepare your child in a calm, age-appropriate way before the appointment. Let them know that they’ll feel a quick pinch — it’s not painful, just a little uncomfortable for a second. Clear and honest expectations always help set kids up for success.
We know numbing sounds helpful, but please don’t use numbing cream.
It causes swelling and makes the skin rubbery, which can lead to longer procedures, uneven placement, and complications during healing.
Numbing cream also only affects the surface layer, which can give a false sense of comfort.
If numbing cream has been applied, the piercer may choose not to proceed at his discretion.
For best results, we ask that you allow the piercer to lead the conversation once you're in the room. Justin has a calm and compassionate approach and will explain what’s happening every step of the way. Too many voices or instructions can be overwhelming, especially for younger kids, we kindly remind parents to avoid offering additional cues or coaching once the appointment starts.
Please avoid offering your child phones, tablets etc during the appointment. We require their direct attention so we will not allow screen use during appointments.
We ask that photos or videos only be taken before or after the piercing process is complete.
We recommend that only one or two adults attend the appointment with your child. We understand this is a big moment, but having extra guests (including siblings, friends, or grandparents) can add pressure or distraction.
We get it, doing this together can feel less scary!
However, we strongly recommend booking for one child at a time to keep things focused and calm.
If you do book back-to-back appointments, we will ask that the more nervous child goes first.
Please note: we do not pierce adults during a child’s appointment.
Verbal and printed aftercare instructions will be provided at the end of the appointment, and a follow-up email with the same information will be sent automatically the next day.
You'll also receive this full prep guide in an automated email when you book your appointment — no need to remember everything right now!
Your child will need to keep their jewelry in 24/7 for the first year. If for any reason you remove their jewelry, ensure it is replaced immediately. We know things can happen with kids, and recommend having an extra pair of earrings on hand just in case!
For the best healing outcome, your child should avoid swimming for a minimum of 1 week, and ideally 2 weeks, after their piercing. This includes pools, lakes, oceans, and hot tubs.
